This past year, Francl Architecture had the exciting opportunity of bringing together key airfield personnel at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) under one roof in the new state-of-the-art Airside Operations Building (AOB). This new integrated facility merges previously dispersed airside departments into one building, improving the overall safety and efficiency of operations and emergency services at YVR.
The project entailed challenging site access, complex infrastructure integration, sophisticated sustainable electrical and mechanical systems, post-disaster structural requirements, and a plethora of equipment and assemblies unique to the AOB. In February 2015, the AOB achieved occupancy and substantial completion and saw its new occupants settled and enjoying the new facility by the end of spring.
Since then, the AOB has been entered into a number of awards incuding the 2015 CISC BC Steel Design Awards of Excellence (award finalist) and the 2015 Vancouver Regional Construction Awards (won for General Contractor – Graham Construction – for a project valued over $40 million).
