The complex program includes passenger enhancements such as a new multi -storey parkade, but its primary mission is extensive civil utility improvements, electrical resiliency, rainwater harvesting system for water conservation, and a new district energy — central utility building (CUB).
Located at a prominent gateway site adjacent to the terminal, the CUB design strikes a pragmatic balance between the YVR thematic design aspirations for airport design with the space needs for large infrastructure. The simple form of the building is articulated in form and materiality according to the program functions, with strategically placed glazing to showcase the internal sustainable energy systems.
The CUB will consolidate terminal infrastructure systems as a post-disaster facility for electrical resiliency upgrades to significantly improve the reliability of the high voltage distribution network, and to provide full 96-hr back up for all critical terminal infrastructure.
