The building is positioned to leave as much space as possible for park use, providing an urban outdoor living room for the neighbourhood residents. A consistent hexagonal design pattern inspired by the geometry of carbon molecules is reflected in both the building and the surrounding landscape to create a cohesive overall site design, and to shape the pathway connections, the places to rest, and the areas for planting.
The Centre supports the hot water boiler plant supplying the City Centre district energy network. The floor of the main boiler hall is depressed below grade to minimize the building height and create views from the public interface into the boiler halls. In concert with the approach to building massing, solar shading louvres complete the elegantly simple building composition and reduce solar heat gain from the south.
