Set in the University of British Columbia’s Endowment Lands of Pacific Spirit Park, on Musqueam ancestral territory, the lelem Community Centre is a thoughtfully planned facility grounded in the Musqueam principles of caring for the land, sustainable living, and fostering a vibrant community life.

The centre organizes its lobby, great hall, gymnasium, fitness spaces, and multi‑purpose rooms to support clear circulation and flexible year‑round programming, while mass timber construction using NLT decking and glulam beams, including reclaimed wood from the site, provides warmth, sustainability, and efficient prefabricated installation supported by a comprehensive moisture control plan. Artwork from five Musqueam artists, wood interiors, and weaving inspired cladding reinforce the building’s cultural identity.
Complex envelope detailing was resolved through coordinated work among architects, engineers, fabricators, and builders, and the project integrates multiple Musqueam artworks, woven patterns, and culturally inspired elements that strengthen identity and belonging. Variegated metal cladding references Musqueam weaving with wood structure and finishes including decking milled from site-harvested trees, create warm interior spaces.
The building showcases strong sustainability commitments using reclaimed wood, all-electric systems connected to a district Passive Energy Loop, sustainable rainwater management via a neighborhood wetland, and net-zero operational carbon emissions for its first five years. It has also achieved LEED Gold Certification.
