lelem Childcare is a purpose-designed early learning facility located at the heart of lelem village on the traditional territory of the Musqueam people.

Nestled between a forest park and an enhanced wetland, the childcare is conceived as a gentle dialogue between architecture, nature, and community. The building is carefully woven among mature trees, preserving all existing vegetation and allowing children to experience a daily, direct connection to the natural landscape.
Originally envisioned as a small, single-storey facility, the project evolved to accommodate 110 children across two levels while maintaining its original footprint. Upper-level activity spaces are designed as "treehouses," with projecting bay windows that extend into the canopy, creating moments of discovery, comfort, and imagination. Natural light, clear sightlines, and intuitive circulation support both learning and supervision.
Architecturally, the childcare complements the adjacent lelem Community Centre through shared proportions and materials. The exterior metal cladding draws inspiration from traditional Musqueam weaving patterns, reinforcing themes of connection, continuity, and belonging. Together, the buildings form a welcoming civic heart—a nurturing home within the forest that reflects respect for land, culture, and community.
