The project began as the renovation and restoration of the historic Wing Sang Building, originally intended to accommodate office suites for a single commercial tenant and a private art gallery. Much of the existing structure was retained, with selective demolition and additions undertaken to address occupant safety, seismic upgrades, and the evolving program requirements.
Shortly thereafter, the building was repurposed as the future home of the Chinese Canadian Museum, prompting a comprehensive interior retrofit to support exhibition and gallery spaces. The project expanded to include further renovations to the basement, Levels 1 through 3, and the roof, with careful attention to code compliance, accessibility, and structural and seismic improvements.
Now complete, the Museum features three levels of gallery and exhibition spaces, thoughtfully integrating adaptively reused elements of the original structure to honour the building’s history and cultural significance.
